Inner city life 12.jpg

BIOGRAPHY

Born in London but moved to Brighton, practicing artist working from my studio in Hove. Recently, my practice has become at the forefront of my daily life, as I have been able to set up my business to allow me to make time and develop a lifelong passion into reality.

History & Development

Throughout my journey as an artist, I’ve had a strong belief in projecting an element of purity and honesty through my work. I want to be as in touch and true to my style as possible, recognising my drive and inspiration.

Art has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, only after I left school, I began to get a glimpse into an inner style and process which became natural to me; it just took the right surroundings and inspiration for me to understand. I enrolled in a one year portfolio course at “The Heatherley School of Fine Art”, which was a completely new experience for me, being surrounded by older students, attending life drawing sessions, learning how to pinpoint and magnify my natural form of expression, using variations of speeds, pressure and movement to build a balanced structure of shapes and colour.

Style & process

The work can take me through many different processes, the initial marks are more expressive, capturing the movement and energy, the slow detailed work is more strategic, working into the page bringing it to life, sometimes even sitting back and viewing the image for hours seeing the way the piece would work from every angle, making sure it’s symmetrical and visually balanced.

I have always seen this as my way of completely engaging with my imagination, the most relaxing form of escapism and sub-conscious form of therapy. I can look back at some of my work and record the process, it’s like a visual map of my mind and the journey I was going through at the time.

I find connections between how I create my work and the music I listen too; I’m very much influenced by certain types of production within electronic music, I like it to balanced, well-constructed, a bit messy and to take you on a journey. The way I engage with music is the way I like to engage visually and also how I want the viewer to connect with my work, I want them to see what they see rather than dictating what they see, this for me makes it more personal for the individual and open for interpretation.

Present & Future

Having been able to spend more time in the studio I’ve been able to develop my practice; working on a heavy gsm Aquarelle water colour paper has always been my choice of surface, it allows me to build-up layers and use all types of mediums including collage. My paintings are becoming more in-depth and natural, also I’m being a lot more experimental with image making through the use of screen printing and collage, creating layers of colours and shapes with bits of cut outs from old paintings and screen prints, producing levels of depth and three-dimensional spaces within the page.

With all the different methods of working, I want to express the same philosophy throughout, an organic process, spontaneity and honesty.
